Today I saw a post on Twitter from comic artist Donal Delay, a man known for posts about pineapple pizza and his own bowl movements. Naturally I’m going to wax poetic.
Before you flee for the hill in fear of subject matter, he actually brought up a good point. It was about how creative people refer to themselves.

As Donal says, we often refer to ourselves as “content creators”, but why? We who pride ourselves in our artistic and imaginative natures call ourselves such a dry and corporate title.
What is a “content creator” even? I am aware the term is self evident. It’s someone who creates content, but content itself is such a nebulous term. It’s just stuff that is there. Specifically stuff that is on social media.
A “content creator” is someone who puts stuff on social media to fill it up. Without content social media is useless, and they rely on us to give them value. That is how they justify their existence to shareholders. By calling yourself a content creator you are reducing yourself to someone who produces stuff for social media corporations.
I know that’s not what you’re there for. You’re there to talk about the things you love, to comment on the going on in the world, and to promote your passions.
As a creative you are allowed to be creative with how you refer to yourself, to add a sense of wonder and grandiosity. In fact, creatives are known to be a bit eccentric. Embrace that and celebrate yourself not as someone who produces inconsequential stuff for corporations, but someone who breathes life and soul into entire worlds.
